The Simms Collection of Crow Indian Shields

Museum Boardroom

Used for power and protection, The Simms Collection of Crow Indian Shields at The Field Museum, Chicago, is the world’s largest collection of Plains Indian shields. It is also the only collection where each shield’s decorative elements were recorded directly from the owner at the time of acquisition. Providing unique insight into Crow Indians’ traditional beliefs and world views, these shields were acquired by the museum’s Assistant Curator of Anthropology, Stephen Simms from 1904-5.

The lecture is presented by scholar and curator Bill Mercer. As the former Executive Director of the North America Indian Heritage Center and Curator of Arts of the Americas for the Portland Art Museum, Mercer has also held positions at the Cincinnati Art Museum, Chaco Canyon Archeological Collection, and Buffalo Bill Historical Center.
