Lecture: How Western Culture Influenced Japanese Art, San Diego Museum of Art, March 27

Tracing the roots of Western Style painting in Japan, Hiroko Johnson, Professor Emeritus at San Diego State University, will discuss the initial phases of Western influence on the country. Johnson will look specifically at Christian influences during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, when artists were Jesuit-trained seminarians, and the influence of Dutch learning, or rangaku, during the mid-eighteenth century, when artists were all from the samurai class.
