NEW ORLEANS, June 27 (DC Times Online) — James Carville said Democrats should consider a “schism” and said he “can’t be in the same party” as Darializa Avila Chevalier, a New York congressional candidate described in published reports as backed by Zohran Mamdani.
Speaking in remarks quoted from a Politicon podcast appearance, Carville said, “I actually do think it’s time for Democrats to talk ‘the S-word.’ ‘Schism.’ I really do,” and added, “I’m done,” according to the reporting. He also said candidates who do not fit in the party should “start your own movement” or “form your own party.”
Carville said he did not want to be in a party “that denies the right of the state of Israel to exist,” and he referred to comments attributed to Avila Chevalier about interracial relationships, saying, “Lady, I ain’t in the same party as you.”
Published reports said Avila Chevalier won a New York Democratic primary on Tuesday and defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, while Claire Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Brad Lander beat Rep. Dan Goldman. Carville had earlier warned in a New York Times op-ed that Democrats were moving toward a “civilized civil war” and said any split should wait until after the 2026 midterm elections.
