CAIRO, June 24 (World Daily Times) — Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said archaeologists uncovered a nearly complete burial cache at the Panhesy tomb site in the Matariya area of Ain Shams, inside the Heliopolis necropolis, finding jewelry, carved scarabs and a copper mirror beneath a burial structure with human remains.
The ministry announced the discovery on May 31 and said the cache included five pairs of yellow-colored metal earrings that archaeologists believe may be made of gold. Officials also released images showing carved scarabs, cosmetic containers and other small artifacts.
Among the items were two alabaster kohl containers with traces of ancient eye makeup, a third kohl container made of black obsidian and four stones, two of which are believed to be agate.
The ministry called the cache the first nearly complete funerary assemblage ever found in the area.
It said the find builds on earlier discoveries at the site this excavation season, including mudbrick and limestone funerary structures and two coffins found in fragmented condition.
