LOS ANGELES, July 15 (Our Los Angeles) — Los Angeles organizers have opened Games-time volunteer applications for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, kicking off the city’s two-year countdown to the event.

LA28 said Tuesday, July 14, that it is seeking up to 60,000 volunteers for what it calls the Volunteer Crew. The private organizing committee said the volunteers will help across eight categories: communications, driving, experience, medical, ceremonies, operations, sport and technology.

What is LA28 looking for?

LA28 said some roles will require specialized skills, including medicine and language translation. The organization said most volunteer opportunities will be in the Los Angeles area, but assignments will also extend beyond Southern California.

According to LA28, volunteer placements will include Oklahoma City and soccer venues in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.

LA28 said the volunteer portal was built in partnership with Deloitte. It also said people who previously registered interest will receive an email with next steps, but anyone may apply whether or not they signed up earlier.

Why does the volunteer program matter?

For LA28, volunteers are part of how the Games will function day to day. The organizing committee says the program will help staff venues, support athletes and spectators, and cover the many jobs needed to run the Olympics and Paralympics.

In its release, LA28 said, “Every great production needs a crew.” Reuters reported that LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover said recent World Cup success showed “the power of sport to unite people” and that “volunteers will be a key part of that experience.”

When are the Games?

LA28 says the Olympic Games will run July 14-30, 2028, and the Paralympic Games will run Aug. 15-27, 2028.

That will make Los Angeles the third city to host three Olympic Games, following 1932 and 1984, according to LA28. The organization also says the 2028 Paralympics will be the city’s first.

What about community volunteering?

LA28 also has a separate community volunteering effort tied to local organizations in Los Angeles. On its volunteer page, the organization says those opportunities focus on sustainability, restoration and the wellbeing of venue cities.

LA28 said there will be an announcement at least seven days before the application closes.

For now, the opening of applications gives would-be volunteers a first step toward the 2028 Games and adds another sign that preparations in Los Angeles are moving from planning into action.
