LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., July 4 (Laguna Beach Daily) — Swimming, surfing and diving are off-limits in a stretch of Laguna Beach after Orange County health officials ordered an ocean-water closure following a Thursday evening sewage spill near Thalia Beach.

The Orange County Health Care Agency said about 2,000 gallons spilled and closed the water from a quarter-mile upcoast to a quarter-mile downcoast of Anita Street. Officials said the closure will remain in place for at least three days, or until water-quality monitoring shows the area meets acceptable standards.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said Orange County Environmental Health was assessing the water and determining how much beach and ocean access needed to stay closed.

“I am monitoring the situation to ensure we protect public health and our beaches,” Foley said in a statement cited in coverage.

County health officials said testing will continue before the area reopens.
