WASHINGTON, June 15 (DC Times Online) — Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to a Washington hospital on the morning of June 14, his office said, and a spokesperson said two days later that he remained engaged in Senate work while receiving care.

McConnell’s office did not say why the 84-year-old Kentucky senator was hospitalized or identify the hospital.

On June 16, David Popp, McConnell’s spokesperson, told CBS News that the senator was “fully engaged with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters.”

Popp said in the initial statement that McConnell was “receiving excellent care.”

McConnell was hospitalized earlier this year after experiencing “flu-like symptoms,” according to statements from Popp.

Popp said McConnell checked himself into a local hospital for evaluation on the night of Feb. 2 after having symptoms over the prior weekend. He was discharged on Feb. 10.

After that discharge, Popp said McConnell was feeling better and would work from home for the rest of that week on doctors’ advice.
