NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., July 6 (Our Newport Beach) — Newport Beach police said they arrested 402 people during Fourth of July celebrations, with about half of the arrests tied to a single Saturday night incident on the Balboa Peninsula.

Police said the crowd was declared an unlawful assembly and that more than 350 officers from the Newport Beach Police Department and 17 regional law enforcement agencies moved in to clear the area, restore emergency access and protect residents and visitors.

CBS News Los Angeles reported that Newport Beach firefighters responded to more than 100 emergency incidents during the holiday period, including 10 fires, and transported 44 people to local hospitals.

ABC7 reported that about 200 people remained near 28th Street after repeated dispersal orders and were taken into custody. The outlet also reported that the arrest total was well above the 60 arrests officers made during the same midnight July 3 to 6 a.m. July 5 window last year.
