EL CAJON, Calif., June 16 (San Diego News Online) — San Diego officials proposed spending $544,668 to support 37 shelter beds at San Diego Rescue Mission’s South County Lighthouse in National City, adding city-funded space at a site that offers meals, showers, laundry and case management year-round.

According to an executive summary prepared by the San Diego Housing Commission, staff sought approval of an operating agreement with San Diego Rescue Mission to run the South County Lighthouse Shelter Program at 2400 Euclid Ave.

The Housing Commission document describes the program as a 37-bed congregate shelter for an initial seven-month term from Dec. 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025, with four one-year renewal options. The agency said the funding source was expected to be City of San Diego General Funds.

The document says the city-funded program would serve up to 37 people who identify as male or non-binary/gender. Those beds are part of the 162 beds San Diego Rescue Mission operates at the National City shelter.

San Diego Rescue Mission describes South County Lighthouse as a referral-only shelter for men, women and families experiencing homelessness from across the county. The nonprofit says the shelter offers 30-day emergency stays and weekly case management.

The Housing Commission said the site is open 365 days a year and provides meals, clothing, showers, laundry and wraparound services. Referrals to the 37-bed program would go through the Coordinated Shelter Intake Program, which the commission administers.

In a Dec. 9, 2024, press release, the City of San Diego said the 37 beds at South County Lighthouse were among about 263 city-funded shelter beds expected to come online at three locations.
